Target Audience: Individuals interested in sustainable fashion and creative upcycling methods.
Course Details:
- Duration: 4 sessions, 2 hours each
- Schedule: Monthly on Wednesdays for four consecutive weeks (excludes April & October)
- Location: FashionBar LLC, Water Tower Place, 835 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611
- Age Requirement: 16 and above (Minors under 18 must be accompanied by an adult)
Course Overview
This hands-on course introduces you to the principles of sustainable, upcycled fashion. Through garment deconstruction and reassembly, you’ll transform old clothing into unique, stylish pieces. No prior sewing experience is needed—this course is open to all skill levels. By the end, you’ll have developed techniques to give new life to old clothes without the need to buy new items.
Teaching Strategies:
- Deconstruct garments to understand construction.
- Reassemble pieces to create new, stylish garments.
- Incorporate discarded pieces as embellishments, promoting zero-waste practices.
Objectives:
- Transform old clothing into fashion-forward pieces.
- Encourage sustainable perspectives on textile waste.
- Empower students to create without buying new items, fostering eco-friendly habits.

- The Art of Sustainable & Consignment Shopping
- Converting Consignment to Sustainable Fashion
- Basic Techniques: Cut, Sew & Redesign Sustainable Fashion
- Fitting & Perfecting: Hems, Inseams, and Final Finishes
Completion
By the end of the course, you’ll have created at least two unique designs.

- Regular ruler
- Tape measure
- Pin & wheel
- Pencils (no pens)
- Regular scissors or rotary cutter
- Thread
- Chalk
- Seam ripper
